present tense -- questions

To form a question in the present tense requires the verb “be” or the verb “do.” In this lesson, you will learn how to use the verb “do” as a helping verb for the main verb.

  • Do your friends learn English? 
  • Why do you learn English? 
  • Do you understand English? 
  • Are you a student? (This question uses the verb “be.”)

do + subject + the main verb

The main verb is in the simple form. 

The helping verb “do” goes before the subject. 

The answer is “yes” or “no.”

helping verb = do or does

main verb = understand

The main verb is in the simple form. 

Note:  English speakers often answer a question that begins with “do” with “yes” or “no.”

Note: If a question begins with the verb “do,” it’s good practice to answer with “do.” Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.
