What is a pronoun?

A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun. Pronouns are also used to represent general ideas or nonspecific people, things, and places.

subject pronouns

Subject pronouns match the main verb: 

 

I am a teacher. 

You like to learn English. 

He goes to school.

we = you + I

they = a group 

of things or people

object pronouns

Object pronouns receive the action of the verb or follow a preposition: 

 

He helped me. (Who received the help?  me

I bought it at the store. (What did I buy?  it

I bought it for them. (For whom did I buy it? them

Come with us. (object of the preposition “with” — us

This gift is for you.  (object of the preposition “of” — you)
