present perfect tense - questions

To make a question in the present perfect tense, the verb “has” or “have” goes before the subject. The main verb is in the form of a past participle: 

has or have + subject + past participle 

  • Has Maria ever owned a cat? 
  • Has Victor ever taken a vacation? 
  • Have you been to New York? 
  • Has it rained lately? 
  • What have you learned so far from this website? 
  • Where have all my tomatoes gone? 

Questions in the present perfect tense seek information about past activities that may include the present. 

Have you ever studied English? 

  • helping verb = Have (have) 
  • subject = you
  • adverb = ever (for time) 
  • main verb =  studied (study) 
  • object = English
study / studied / studied / studying

has or have + subject + past participle

Put “has” or “have” before the subject to form a question. Use the past participle for the main verb.

singular

Have I done it? 

Have you done it? 

Has he done it? 

Has she done it? 

Has it done it? 

plural

Have we done it? 

Have you done it? 

Have they done it? 

 

do / did / done / doing

The answer to a question that begins with “have” should also inclue “have.” 

  • A: Has he done it? 
  • B: Yes, he has. 
  • A: Have you done it? 
  • B: No, I haven’t.

noun phrase = a lot of work 

time expression = so far today

QW + have or has + the past participle

QW = question word. To form a question for information, put the question word at the beginning before “has” or “have.” 

  • Where have you been? 
  • What have you done so far today? 
  • Why have our students stopped coming to class? 
  • Whom has he chosen to marry? 
  • When have I ever needed help? 
  • Why has Maria decided to learn English? 
  • How long has the light been on?
