 The word pad usually refers to something soft or flat that covers or protects a surface. There are several common ways this word is used in everyday English, and there are many different types of pads.

 

  • People often write notes on a pad of paper or a notepad
  • Many computer users place their mouse on a mouse pad so that the mouse can move smoothly. 
  • Frogs are known to sit on lily pads, which are the flat, round leaves that float on the surface of a pond.
  • mattress pad is a soft layer placed on top of a mattress to make a bed more comfortable.
  • When something is padded, it contains extra soft material that protects or cushions it.
  • Athletes and children sometimes wear knee pads and elbow pads to protect their joints from injury.
  • In informal American English, the word pad can also mean an apartment or place where someone lives.

    • Vanessa uses a heating pad on her back when her back hurts. 

    • Violent, self-destructive people may be placed in a padded cell for their own protection.
