job

A job is something that you do in order to make money. A person with a job might work for a company or do some kind of work that is independent of a company. 

  • He goes to his job early in the morning. 
  • He’s happy to have his job. 
  • His job involves pouring concrete. 
  • He has a hard job.  

A job is different from a career. A person with a job is usually employed by one company and receives a paycheck from that company.

b. There's a difference between a job and a career.

A job is usually held under the direction of a company. A career can span the length of a person’s entire life.

  • My second job was in St. Paul teaching English to high school students. 
  • I’m glad I chose a career in education because there are many good jobs available in this field.

c. When you want to get a job, you fill out a job application:

  • Fill out the job application carefully. 
  • Many job applications these days are online. 
  • Some job applications are on paper.  
  • The job application shows your work history. 
  • It shows how many different jobs you have had.
